Big Ben-Up Close

The Clock Tower is at the northeast end of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster.

The largest of the five tower bells, Big Ben, first rang in July of 1859. Big Ben is heard on the hour, and the four smaller bells are heard playing Westminster Quarters each quarter hour. The clock's reliability is famous.

The time is kept fine tuned by placing a stack of old penny coins on top of the pendulum. Adding or removing the pennies alters the pendulum's center of gravity. Adding or removing a penny changes the clock's timing by four tenths of a second per day.
