Black Madonna and Bird—Montserrat Shrine, Spain

In Catholic tradition, the statue of the Black Virgin of Montserrat was carved by Saint Luke around 59 AD, and then brought to Spain. Later, it was hidden from the Moors and rediscovered in 880 AD. According to the legend of the discovery, first recorded in the 13th century, shepherds saw a bright light and heard heavenly music that led them to a grotto and the statue. The small statue was too heavy to lift and remained at Montserrat.
