A high flying hawk soars above the Elizabeth Bridge, located at the narrowest section of the Danube river, in Budapest, Hungary. The bridge, originally built between 1897 and 1903, is named after Queen Elizabeth, who was a popular queen and empress of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Near the end of World War II, the Elizabeth Bridge and many others were destroyed by the retreating German Wehrmacht. This is the only Budapest bridge not rebuilt in its original form. The current cable bridge was built on the same location between 1961 and 1964 because Hungary could not afford to build new foundations for the bridge.
