London, England— - The Romans named it Londinium when they built it around 50AD. Londinium grew to a port city with a population of about 45,000 people and was a major trade center for Rome. The Romans left England in 407AD, and were replaced by the Anglo-Saxons, who came from the German regions of Angeln and Saxony.

Anglo-Saxon rule ended in 1066 following the death of Edward the Confessor. William of Normandy claimed the crown and crossed the channel from France to defeat Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings.

The rest, as they say, is history.
