Gary Ricketts > A View of Pest—Budapest, Hungary

On October 23, 1956, thousands of people took to the streets of Budapest to protest one party rule established by the Soviet Union. The statue of Stalin was pulled down, and a new leader appointed. The Soviet Union responded with military force, killing thousands of people, arresting thousands more, and thus forcefully ending the revolution.

In May, 2004—just two days before the Republic of Hungary joined the European Union—the Budapest city council revoked Stalin's 1947 honorary citizenship, granted in recognition of his liberation of Hungary from the Germans at the end of World War II.

Gary Ricketts > Arched Windows—Prague, Czech Republic

Since the 1989 Velvet Revolution, which ended Communism in the Czech Republic, Prague is one of the most popular tourist spots in Europe. The city escaped serious damage during World War II, preserving most of its historical architecture. Prague has some of the world’s most pristine and varied collection of architecture.

The two act opera Don Giovanni, music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, premiered at the Estates Theatre in Prague on October 29, 1787. In the right window is reflected the sculpture of those who Come for Giavonni.

Český Krumlov Castle was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Krumlov. The last Krumlov died in 1302 without leaving an heir. The castle and the surrounding area became the property of the Rosenbergs, who occupied the castle for 300 years.

Columbus Circle, just south and west of Central Park's southwestern entrance, is the point where distances to and from New York City are officially measured.

The shops at Columbus Circle, a mall in the Time Warner Center, house the ten most expensive restaurants in New York City: Price range $100 to $500 per entrée.

The original Gapstow Bridge was built in 1874 and was a unique wooden bridge with ornamented cast iron railings. However, it only lasted slightly more than twenty years before wear and tear took its toll.

That bridge was replaced in 1896 with the present simple stone structure.

During the summer months, the bridge is covered with green ivy.

Construction of the present-day cathedral started in 1344 and was finally completed in 1929.

The cathedral is a tribute to the patron saint of the Czech Republic, St. Wenceslas.

Good King Wenceslas of Christmas carol fame, who was actually a duke, made Christianity the state religion of Bohemia (Czech Republic) during the 930's. Even today, Prague is known as the city of a thousand spires.

In 1873, the cities of Buda, and Pest united to become Budapest. The Danube river separated the two until the construction of the Chain Bridge in 1849.

Modernization of Budapest, on an unprecedented scale, began in 1896, including Europe’s first subway system. The resulting concentration of capital and workforce brought intellectual and economic prosperity.

Unfortunately, the 20th Century was not so kind to the city, and much of its former beauty is in need of serious repair.

The London Eye, built for the millennium, sits at the center of London as a symbol of modern Britain. Since its opening in 2000, the London Eye attracts 3.5 million paid visitors per year.

The wheel is 442 feet high with a circumference of 1,392 feet. Thirty-two capsules can carry 800 passengers during each thirty minute rotation. The slow rotation allows passengers to step on and off without stopping the wheel. On a clear London day, passengers can see as far as Windsor Castle, about twenty-five miles from the London Eye.

The cornerstone of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral was laid in 1858, but work on the building was suspended during the Civil War. Construction started again in 1865.

John Cardinal McCloskey, the first American Cardinal, opened the doors in May, 1879.

Everyday hugh crowds pass by and through Saint Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue between 50th and 51st street, but when the cornerstone was laid—the location was far outside the city in the wilderness.
