Gary Ricketts > Saint Patrick’s At Night—New York City

The cornerstone of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral was laid in 1858, but work on the building was suspended during the Civil War. Construction started again in 1865.

John Cardinal McCloskey, the first American Cardinal, opened the doors in May, 1879.

Everyday hugh crowds pass by and through Saint Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue between 50th and 51st street, but when the cornerstone was laid—the location was far outside the city in the wilderness.

Gary Ricketts > The Green Door

In 1873, the cities of Buda, and Pest united to become Budapest. The Danube river separated the two until the construction of the Chain Bridge in 1849.

Modernization of Budapest, on an unprecedented scale, began in 1896, including Europe’s first subway system. The resulting concentration of capital and workforce brought intellectual and economic prosperity.

Unfortunately, the 20th Century was not so kind to the city, and much of its former beauty is in need of serious repair.

Shades Valley Camera Club - December 3, 2008

The average annual snowfall in New York City is 28 inches. Almost that much snow fell on one weekend in February, 2006. On February 11th and 12th of 2006, a total of 26.9 inches of snow fell on Central Park. It was the largest snowfall recorded since record keeping began in 1869.

To speed removal of snow throughout the city, diesel powered snow melting machines were used, each of which melted sixty tons of snow per hour. The resulting water went directly into the sewer system.

By Wednesday of that week, Central Park recorded a high temperature of 52 degrees.
Gary Ricketts > Watch Towers

The fields of yellow with streaks of green surrounding the watch towers are sunflowers, blurred as the photographer’s bus sped pass at seventy miles per hour. Sunflowers, raised to produce cooking oil, are a major crop covering almost three million areas of farmland in the Czech Republic.

And what about the watch towers? One can only speculate. Perhaps they are simply a relic from the days of farm collectives under Communism.
